Did you use a pattern? If so, can you share the name of it and the designer please?

I designed the quilt but I did use a pattern for the center compass medallion which is around 36" or so and the smaller compasses scattered throughout the quilt. It can be found in Judy Mathieson's book "Mariner's Compass quilts, setting a new course". The book also has the pattern for the ring of points going around the partial compass in the center square.

I highly recommend the book, she gives patterns for several different styles and sizes of compass blocks, teaches you how to draft your own to any size you like, and teaches the freezer paper piecing technique where you do not stitch through the paper but right next to it. The paper is folded back on the seam line as each unit of the patchwork is added. IMHO this is an invaluable technique to learn and no more difficult then traditional PP except that it has a few extra steps in the beginning. The biggest advantages are no tedious removal of the paper, it is easy to see if your piece of fabric is not going to be big enough, and you can reuse patter pieces several times. I found her instructions clear and easy to follow and she has loads of pictures. You can find Judy's book on Amazon for around $15. Just having the book for all the pictures is worth it, even if you never make one of her star blocks. But I bet you will once you start browsing the book!

Absolutely gorgeous, congrats on your ribbon. You did a wonderful job on it. Men sometimes don't get the fabric shopping thing, I prefer to go without them. Quilting is awesome.

Yes you are right, it is all hand quilted, a true labor of love and a gift for my brother. I enjoy having handwork and just worked on it evenings when watching TV with DH. I didn't work on it every night and sometimes I took several weeks off without picking it up at all. I had the quilt top completely pieced when I joined the board back in 2009. I started quilting it a few months after I joined, so it took a little over 2 years to handquilt. It was a WIP for around 3 and I had the fabric for about a year before making it. I think my brother was asking for a quilt for a couple of years before I started it! He is totally stoked that he is finally getting it after seeing it's slow progress for 4 years.
