My DH is also a Coastie and I am going to make him a Mariner's Compass also. He requested lighthouses on the borders so I'm embroidering 12x12 blocks with different lighthouses and will put them on the borders... Because I am a very slow embroiderer and slow quilter... this is going to take some time... :p
I hope you post pictures when it is done. Where were you stationed? We were in Astoria Or. in 1959 and then Portland Or Alaska for 5 1/2 years. Massachusetts 4 years, Md for 3 years, Hawaii3 years, Back to Astoria 3 years, nad retired from Hawaii(second tour or 3 1/2 years, and now in Forest Grove Or.
Glad you like the quilt. it will be one of my master pieces! My other one is a king size Hawaiian quilt.
Jan, He was on the Glacier Ice breaker and spent time in Antarctica, Peru, New Zealand. His home base was LA but he was very seldom there. He got out of the service in 1976 and we met in 1978 and got married in 1979.

This is absolutely gorgeous! I have tried the Storm at Sea and failed twice. All those corners meeting together - it never layed down right and there was just a huge lump of material at each intersection.

You, and all the folks on this board, are so very talented and give me such great ideas - Who needs magazines???
