My new 301

Last weekend I bought this on Ebay, I think I got a great deal. Yesterday, when I got home from work, she was here. After I got her out of the box and read the manual, oiled her, threaded and started sewing. The tension needed a little adjusting, but she sews great, she just purrs. Poor thing must have been in that case a long time, as she has that attic smell. I think I'll name her Maude, for my great aunt, as she let me sew on her FW when I was a child.

Great looking machine! Try sticking an odor-eater's shoe insole (with carbon) inside the case. Takes away the moldy smell and no mess. It even cushions the machine a little when the machine is in there too.

Oh, my heart is yearning for one of these, and my head is saying: How many machines do you really need?!!?
Just got two more yesterday at a living estate sale. She is a retired home ec teacher, and made me an offer I couldn't refuse. Two machines and a treadle cabinet. Will post some pics, maybe tomorrow.

I have that very machine...it used to be my Grandmother's. I haven't used it because I wanted a machine that had a few more stitches to offer. So tell me...since I don't collect machines...why do folks collect the older machines that don't offer more variety in stitches, etc. Do they sew better? I'd like to know so I'll either get mine serviced and up and running again or find another home for her. Thanks!

There are probably different reasons for different people to buy the vintage machines. I do believe it is the nostalgia of them, for one. I also think that some of these older Singers make a much better stitch than some of the new machines. Many of the older machines are made to last while the present day machines aren't. I enjoy looking at my 66-16 and sit down and play with it just for the heck of it. Some times it is just different strokes for different folks......although I do see that many buy them just for the novelty of them.
