    Nice 301! I hope you enjoy your new toy.
    I've got 2 black short bed 301 machines, #1 cost $200.00, #2 was free. They both sew very well. I've had all the colors of the 301,sold off all but 2.

    I'm getting this same machine from my DM & it hums just as quiet as both of my Featherweights! Enjoy your "new" old machine!!

    The 301's are terrific and yes, better than the featherweight, feed dogs drop, motor is enclosed -it's gear driven and not
    belt driven , the slant shank brings your work area closer to you....I could go on. I have a tan long bed and short bed, 2 LBOW (light beige oyster white) only made with the short bed, 3 black long bed and 1 black short bed. That makes 8. The LBOW makes it easier to see the work area.

    I love the old Singers. Its too bad today's machines are not as good as the old ones.
