What a great desk. Many wonderful quilts yet to come out of that space.

What you have is an old desk back when we used manual typewriters. There should be a heavy spring under the shelf where you have your sewing machine. To lift you pull the shelf out as far as you can then, with your hand on the outside edge, lift the shelf up. It should lock in place. I believe you just reverse the procedure to get the shelf down and pushed back in place to close the door. If you can get it to do that you should be able to to stand your sewing machine erect on the shelf at all times. Brings back a lot of memories seeing that old desk.

Your sewing room looks really nice, I see that you have a blue canning jar. Look at the bottom and see what the number is on it. 13 is more valuable than the rest because of superstition they didn't make many of thoes. I have one but it has a crack in it. Libby

loves2quilt, I am sitting at a desk made by the same company - great quality, but heavy as can be!! When we move from here, we will have to hire 4 young men to move it!

Enjoy your secretary's desk. I recognized the typewriter shelf as soon as I saw the desk. It is so handy. You will get a lot of use out of the desk. Great call on moving your sewing room downstairs!

Good for you! I've got a great sewing room down in the basement, but sometimes I think it would really be nice to sew upstairs where everybody else hangs out. Love those 301's!

I love your new sewing room. Those slide out shelves were for the old typewriters and I think it should pop up. Someone may have changed it and used it for a printer shelf. When all six of our children lived at home (seemed like forever lol), the only room I had to sew in was the dining room with the table, buffet and china cabinet in place. I made many a dress in that room. I loved it. Although I had to put everything away at night and that was too bad. Good Sewing!
