This is a variation of the dresden plate pattern. I have a similar set of hand sewn pieces that were from my grandmother. I know her work was done in the 30's and 40's and the material is very similar. She used to get her fabric from a manufacturer of cotton housedresses - bundles of odd scraps from the cutting room and almost impossible to cut on the grain so dresden plate or grandmothers garden patterns were the most practical use for the material. Applique on a netural fabric and the centers can either be filled with a blending color or turned under with the backing showing thru the hole.

dashton4, that's justoo cute. But I think just a plain ole appliquied on muslin quilt will be okay with me. I like the large separate block idea, so far.I'll keep looking, though.

What a great find! Sometimes there is nothing at garage sales and sometimes - bonanza!! Enjoy them.

Thanks, pkary, for the little history lesson! I love learning more about fabric history!

Congrats on your find. Very nice. Make a wall hanging if nothing else. Beautiful.

I guess I am thinking differently than everyone else... I think they would look wonderful on a 30's /40's colored background. Say the thirties green, or lavendar...maybe even blue. Then you could make the center the same color. It would tie them all together and would make it look very authentic to the time frame. Those dresden plate patterns would really stand out and would give it a real authentic look, plus add a little "brightness" to the wonderful pieces that have been so lovingly stitched (and found their way to you to rescue!)
