Here's some pics of a name thing I made for my wife for her classroom. She teaches 6th grade. It measures 9" x 44" and was made from a charm pack of "Penelope" fabric by Moda. The script writing was done with muslin that I cut strips of 3/8" wide and then stiched down the center of them. After that, I snipped the muslin in the tight curves to ease the fabric, and then I washed the whole thing to fray the edges of the muslin.

For the script, I used Microsoft Word to spell out the text using Edwardian script. I printed it off and slit through the middle of the lines of the text on the paper with an Xacto knife. I then laid that over the completed quilted part and used a pencil to draw through the slit onto the fabric. These pencil lines gave me the guide of where to sew the muslin.

The top pic showing the overall thing looks a little skewed, but it's the camera lens that caused that, it's really actually square.

The whole thing was really very easy to do, took me about 3.5 hours from start to finish this afternoon. With school starting soon, it'd make a nice gift if you know a teacher. They all have their names outside their rooms or on the wall inside. My wife loved it when I gave it to her.

Really beautiful idea....I am sure the students will love it just as much as your wife. You had better be aware some of her colleagues may want their own "custom quilted" name!

That is truly a nice thing to do for a teacher! It is nice that you thought to do that for your wife! As a retired teacher, I give you an A++ also.
