Default Need some restoration help please...

This quilt is one of 4 things I have from my father's side of the family. I also have 2 pictures of him (I've never actually met him or any of his family), and I am named after his little sister. I only learned of the existence of this quilt a few years ago, before I started quilting. My grandma saved it when she saw my mother about to throw it in the trash when I was very young. My other grandma (his mother) made this for me... As a quilter, I can see the love that went into all those hand stitches. It needs a lot of help and being a new quilter, I'm not sure where to begin... The binding is completely gone... The fabric the applique is on is very thin and I don't think it will last. I have never done hand applique before, so I am afraid to move them to a better fabric. I want to restore this and pass it down to my children... Any hints, tips, suggestions and flat out directions are very welcome...
    Thank you in advance!

It's a beautiful quilt and I don't think I would worry too much about the thin fabric , I just wouldn't use the quilt and keep it as it is, except, I would put a new binding on it. Good luck in what you do to preserve it.

I would put binding over the one that was on it. Not sure about the thin fabric. If it isn't torn, I would not do anything to it. Good luck!

I would just put a new binding and not do anything else to it. once you start working on it, then it won't be the one she made for you. Of course, in the shape it is in I would not use it, maybe hang it on a quilt rack though.

Definitely a new binding and had you thought of having it framed? They do beautiful framing at Hobby Lobby and if you watch the sales flyers you can get a coupon for 40-50% off.

I love the idea of framing your little quilt - it pays homage to the quilter, and is a piece of your family history. That way its protected and will be enjoyed for future generations. It would be a nice touch if you had a family history or tree to attach to the back to pass on, too, along with a short explanation as to who made it, and the details you know about your family.
