Absolutely wonderful and so fun to look at! I like your piece so much better than the first one featured in the book (your inspiration piece);Your choice of fabrics is far better than the original, since you give the horsies more contrast. My dtr-in-law is a horse lover ...... used to take riding lessons and did her share of competition, etc. ...... I may need to purchase the book and make this for her. I love doing applique and embellishing with buttons, yarns, etc. Thanks for posting this

Thanks! I appliquéd' the second one today--all the heads, eyes, and nostrils are secure. The dark one came out short--so he'll have to be a pony. :lol: I still need to add halters to the second and add mouths to all of them. Quilting these is going to be a challenge--idea wise. If anyone has a suggestion.... I'm listening.

Karla, I would trapunto the horses. Just put a layer of batting on the bottom, and from the top, sew around the horse shape. Then trim the extra batting away from the shapes. Then when you make your regular "sandwich", outline the horses again, and it will make the heads stand out. It's actually easier than it sounds, and since you are outlining, you don't have to try to sew through the thicker suede. Then just SITD for the rest of the barn details.

Holy moly--that sounds complicated and like just one more way for me to make major errors--but I'll peek at it.
I watched the first one and part of the 2nd--interesting. :-D but if I already appliqued around the heads--it'd be three layers of stitching around them-- :?:

Karla...you sew the first layer of batting with water soluable thread...then when you quilt it (actually quilt it)..you use your normal thread you would use to quilt. Then wet the quilt...hmmm...now that I'm thinking..I'm not sure how your suede would react to the water..but normally, I would wet the quilt before trimming it square and binding.
