    you mark your grid with thread? but how do you mark the designs, if you do? that is lovely.

    No, this is not the grid. I always sew a thread with a contrasting color through the middle of the top, vertically and horizontally, before I begin to quilt. These "seams" I use for the alignment of the patterns in the center and also for the grids, so I keep the same angle for the grid lines. They are also very helpful to bring the borders into line.
