very nice ~ keep going Colleen :) don't give up, I even had days where I fought with a hanky to get it to "behave" only to feel like throwing things... I am so glad I worked thru it! :)

whew, lotta work, I went further than i intended, but I think the results were well worth it! BTW my granddaughter decided to make an early entrance into this world, so first here's my newest grandbaby

I tried many different ways to do the borders. The original idea was a collage of left over hankies or ones that had a small hole or stain that would not come out. After spending two days laying out a side and pinning it all in place, I butted it up against the quilt and it made it super busy. NOT the way to go...
Then I took the rainbow effect and made strips of border. Tried single. Double. Triple. Irish chained it. Totally detracted from the butterflies, and made them kinda dissappear into the woodwork. NOT the way to go.
Then I had some of my extra pieces of fabric just laying there, off to the side, minding their own little business... they were stacked just right that I happened to look at it with fresh eyes, and believe it or not, after all that, the simple colorwork with a scalloped border is the way to go.
BTW I did try purple, dark teal, and yellow as the oute-most border, and it reminded me of cotton candy. Too sweet for my tastes, as much as I loved that blue! But the olive mottled brought it back to a "nature" feel, and lets the butterflies be the focus, and draws out the center panel, too. I hope you all agree!
So, this is the final top, BEFORE the scalloping. I've marked the scallops and its on the frame, trying to finish all the quilting, I'm down to the last couple days. The bride and groom are going on their honeymoon immediately, so my SIL may end up washing it if I run out of time. I don't want to screw up the stitching now, after all this!!! So on to the pics... whole top, plus each individual bfly so you can see the crewel embroidery I did by hand... I had a few people in awe when I took it to the store to match up the outer-most border. One lady followed me around the store, chatting with me and asking me questions LOL

butterfly #1 ~ I know the crewel may be hard to see on each butterfly, but each one has crewelwork, and I tried to embellish each pattern / colors

bfly #2 ~ the tops of the wings actually have satin ribbon interwoven with the crewel stitches

bfly #3 ~ butterflies like this with so much tatting really need secured, averaged about 2-3 hours depending on how secure you want to make them... I had to stitch each intersection of tatting!

bfly #4 (I am working clockwise) ~ I call this one MardiGras because its got so many colors!
