Since the thimble is not on the hand holding the needle and there apparently is no thread in the needle, and unless that is leather and not fabric the needle is unusually large, I would say this is a beautifully staged photograph. I wonder if she could actually sew or mend? She lived much of her life in New Mexico and probably had maids to do that work while she painted that it would not be unusual if she did not sew or mend herself.
