I actually wound up moving it to the bottom, so it transitions much better and doesn't stuck out so much. Thanks for the tip though, I was fighting with it all day.

    Another fabulous rendition.

I like the way k3n described the difference between the octs and hexes. I don't mind piecing either. But if I was undecided about which way to go with a particular fabric, that would be a great way to make the choice.

I'm really entranced by all the movement in this one (octs)- all those whirlpools/vortices churning away, while the hexes in the op were much more subdued (because of the blending).

Love them both. Thanks for posting.

Stunning and sophisticated! I'm not usually drawn to black and red quilts, but yours is outstanding!!

I just separated them by value and color and started throwing them on the ground. If I didn't like where a block was, or if it stood out too much, I moved it around. I took most of the day to decide on this layout; I'd move a block or two, do something else, come back to it, realize it looked awful, and move more things. I really like OBW's that have a pillar of color in them, and since the red was so vibrant in this fabric I thought it would be a perfect fit for that style. The book is really helpful for deciding how to lay your blocks out, I highly recommend it.
    thanks
