This thread is so timely. Five friends and I are exchanging blocks tonight. They are painters and I'm the lone quilter. I did do a class with them on quilting. I'm sure they painted on cotton so it will be a challenge for each of us to complete the wallhanging. We may have to do another exchange on silk - they will experiment and so will I. Thank you so much for your beautiful work.

Absolutely beautiful. I love the way you combined the two mediums. You are very creative! Would like to know which paints you used and just how you did it.

The coneflowers was done on silk, I used watercolors, mixed with fabric medium.

First I traced a copy of a photo of coneflowers in my garden, then I traced it on the fabric. I sandwiched muslin, batting and the silk, and with monofiliment thread free motion sewed my tracing. Then I added resist to the areas I didn't want to bleed. then just started mixing colors and did my first layer of paint, let it dry thoroughly, took 2 days.

I then went back and highlighted where I wanted more color, and let it dry again.

Next, I used variegated thread and thread painted where I wanted to add emphasis.

I then added a border and backing, and quilted. The beads were added last.

It was fun, a learning process, as it was the first time I tried it.

The other 2 are done with acrylic on muslin, and I'm not sure I like it as much. The paints are much more stiffer than the watercolor. Had to try it though.
