many times they were made just to show off the embroidery skills of the maker. They were often used for covering the grand piano or pump organ in the "front parlor"

I had one as a child living with my grandmother. It was made by her maiden aunt. She gave it to me to take back home and my mother put it in a washing machine and ruined it. I cried for days. It was so beautiful and I loved it so much.

It is really beautiful. I vote for the historical society.

Are there any names or history that you could follow up on??

it is a very beautiful quilt. i collect old quilts and there are plenty more who love the old quilts if you wish to sell it or give it to someone. perhaps someone in your family would love to have it to cherish and display. if not, and you don't wish to sell, then perhaps the museum or perhaps give it to some local charity of your choice to raffle off to make money for that.
