No offence meant to you AT ALL dunster! :D

K, I take no offense whatsoever. I was amazed, the first time I tried this technique, at how simple and HOW MUCH FUN it was. No y-seams, and if your corners don't match perfectly the effect isn't lost because the pattern is so busy you don't easily see the mistakes. The hard part is finding some fabric that you think will work. I've started putting another one together but am unhappy with the way it's looking.

Thanks dunster - I thought you'd understand what i was trying to say but just wanted to be absolutely clear! Can you post pics of your next one? Or are you so unhappy with it you want to hide it away?! LOL

Dunster:
Very lovely quilt. Love the colors.
I have been wanting to try this technique for a long time. My SIL brought me back a book on the Stack-n-Wack method. I was so intmidated. But you and K have given me some encouragement. I will have to bite the bullet and try it.
Let us know how you did in your show and tell at the quilt guild. I bet they loved it

I will surely post something when I'm done with it, if not before (to get ideas on what to do). The main problem, which I didn't see when I first looked at the fabric, is that the background color is very drab. I'm thinking about doing applique on the top after it's pieced, and maybe not using the hexagons with the rest of the fabric but doing something that will mix this fabric up with others. I need to let the thoughts gel for a while before proceeding, but I will finish it somehow. For applique I might use a Japanese theme, such as pagodas, geisha, fans, etc. or a garden theme such as trellis, flowers... It could be silhouette or color...

Here's the fabric and the current state of the design wall (keep in mind the hexagons are only half-hexagons at this stage, and taped together then stuck on the wall so it looks a mess). If anyone has any other ideas I'd love to hear them.

Dunster,

I don't see the background as drab, more subtle! :D

Here's what i would try - you have a very purple hex top left - put it in the middle, then all the other purple ones around it then radiating out into the drabber, sorry, SUBTLER blocks! Then maybe an inner border (maybe one of those skinny ones she talks about in the book) then an outer border with your oriental appliqué idea, again picking up on the purple; BTW I think I've got some of that fabric - a left over from my Mum's neighbour, but only a fat or so! :D

Beautiful!! Love the fabric. Wow!!!

I don't see drab at all! I love the contrast with the purple and would love to play with your hexagons!

I'm with Billswife. I don't think it's drab, I think it is beautifully subtle, and the purple makes it pop!

After a while I too ceased to see the fabric as drab. I finished the additional blocks, arranged it, and have started quilting it - more pics when it's done. I guess it just takes some time to get used to a different color combination. Thanks for telling me the fabric was okay.
