I first learned to quilt on my DH's gramdmother's old home made frame. It had 2 poles that were 2 in square . and had muslin stapled to the edges. They sat in slots cut out of home made saw horses. I would take the poles up to our community building, push the tables together. pin all three layers to one pole, let it lay over the edge of the table for tension, and pin to the other pole.  Then when you got ready to turn it, it would take at least 3 people to unroll some, and tighten it back up on both poles.I quilted on these for 3 years. Then I saw a picture of an Hinterberg Frame in a quilting magazine, and showed it to DH, saying how "fancy" it was. I didn't know he called and got the information, and then ordered the frames for me for my birthday that year. What a surprise!!! I am teased by DH and kids, that this is my favorite piece of furniture in our home   Getting a quilt layered, and on the poles right was about a 4 hr job with the old one. With this one, I can put one in in about 30 minutes , by myself. And, I can turn it by myself in 1 minute. If you love to hand quilt, this a great set of frames. You can also order the plans and the hardware and make your own set, if someone you knows does wood work. Good luck!!!

:-D

Ninnie, How is the quilting going? Any updated pictures or have you finished already

Late Bloomer 06-26-2010 01:49 PM

Those pictures are great! It took me a lot longer the first time I did my Grace frame but it is basically the same as what you have. Yours looks to be a much sturdier and better made frame, but I do know that it is a bit more expensive. Being new, I did not know one from another, but my frame works for me. I did do an overside lap quilt on a large Hintenburg round standing hoop but I will never do that again. It was much too big and bulky and that frame is better suited for smaller pieces, I think. While I think of it, do you have trouble wth Fons and Porter pencils? Mine do not seem to show up very well so I end up using regular #2 pencils which washes out completely when I wash the quilt. it is the only pencil that I can get to show up clearly.

Now that's a hand full.lol

chickadee_42us 06-29-2010 11:20 AM

Ninnie - any updated quilting photos?
Looks like the heart stencil was specifically created for this pattern.
Very nice job. Very nice quilting. Very nice lady to show us the steps. :-)

How long are your rollers? And have you ever tried doing a quilt that is longer than the rollers?

My rollers are 87.5" long on the inside of the frame. But the two quilts I have to do are 89" and 90".

I'm trying to figure out what to do...try to extend the length of the rollers (a project for DH since my rollers are metal conduit)?

Have you ever done a quilt that was too long and folded the too long end over on itself on one end? I would think that it would get to thick on the front bar as you roll the completed quilt towards you...

I don't have a long arm, but great questions!
Ninnie, as you know I haven't been around much for a good while.
The quilt is gorgeeeeous, like you haven't been told that!
Can't wait to see it all done, but I can wait...not impatient like the others. so, the minute you are tired of it...you remember our agreement.
I'm next in line, lol :XD:

Thanks to your wonderful tutorial, I was able to get my quilt loaded on my new frame! I'm a visual person, so seeing yours was more helpful than reading the instructions that came with mine! LOL

The rollers that came with mine only had a useable space of 87.5", so I bought new ratchet wheels and end caps and DH made new rollers from metal electrical conduit (the same material the rollers that came with it were made from).

The new rollers (shown in the picture here) have a useable space of 110"!!!! That will give you an idea of how long this one is! The entire frame is 10' long (that is including the legs).

Here are the steps I have taken so far. You will notice that the frame has 3 poles, the back one and the middle one, the gears run to the back. the front one, the gears run to the front.

I just noticed one difference...
the instructions for my frame said to roll the batting and TOP together on the back roller...which I did.
I see that you roll your batting and BACKING together.

Minor detail...but other than that...
it looks the same and I'm LOVING quilting on it! It is high enough so I don't have to hunch over any...and it tilts to just the right angle...whatever that angle is for you! :)

Thanks again for the wonderful tute!

Thanks for the step by step process. It's a good review for me to set up my quilt on my frame. It's always good for a refresher . :-D

Hi guys
I have been away for awhile, life got in the way. But i am back, :):) I took some time off from quilting, but last week my fingers started itching to pick up needle, and so i am back at frame, quilting this one. I am half way now. I thought i would do a tute on hand quilting in a frame if anyone wants me to. Wow, i have missed this place and all of u!!!!

Do you use the stencils with a regular machine? I wonderd if you trace them on and then stitch around the marks?
