What a pain! I would applique over, I have done this and it is amazing how the repair "disappears" once it's been washed. I had a similar thing happen to me but not with quilting fabric. My husband bought a pair of 100% cotton walk shorts and they completely disintegrated in the wash...tiny fragments everywhere, the only thing left in one piece was the waistband.

Thank you for the posting. I had never heard of this happening. Now we all know! God bless!

I can't believe you did either dear, especially since you had to replace the border. So sorry, I don't envy you having to rip it all out. How many butterflies do you have to redo. Just dive in and do it. You won't be satisfied unless you do, the rest looks too lovely to leave like that. I do hope you didn't have a deadline to meet for this quilt.

I would not rip it apart, but fuse some good fabric on there and quilt over it in the original pattern, or applique some good black over it and quilt it.

Shame on that fabric! I would think an applique over the wings would be the way to go. Did it happen on the lot of wings or just a few? I would be tempted to lay an applique over the wing and stitch it down with bright variegated thread.

So sorry for you

Is there any way to re create using the faulty material...like raw edge applique strips over the torn pieces or decorative threads? Just thoughts...I hate ripping and resewing. Maybe have striped wings with other material or decorative threads leaving the black. Don't know if this makes it clear what I am suggesting. So sorry.
