That is a beautiful quilt! I have been looking for that pattern for a really long time. Where can I get it?
Thanks!

I Love your Carpenter's Star - one of my favorites. You did a terrific job.

Thank you all.
Several people on this thread and others have asked questions on enlarging patterns. With a pattern that is based on HSTs, like this one, the math is relatively simple. I wanted a 40" wide quilt. There are 10 subunits going across the quilt, so each finished HST should be 4". I cut squares of 5" for every HST (giving myself 1/8" for trimming).

I have done the same thing with a sawtooth star, but I worked my math in the other direction. My fabric was 40" wide (excluding the selvedges), so I cut 10" squares for my subunits, resulting in 9" HST's. By adding a 2 1/2" (cut at 3") border, I have a 41" wide quilt, so I used a 41" backing, with no piecing. Since I am using 45x54" batting, I added an inner border on the top and bottom, making the finished shape I wanted.

The idea is to break your about to be supersized block down into equal subunits and work from there.

Hi Mauritiuss4: Look back at the previous page - QM gives a great breakdown for sizes. Here is a link to a tutorial from our board from Stitchinbee to show you how to put it together. Please post a picture when you are done!!

DH and I have decided that except for really special commissions, all the quilts I make from here on are to benefit family, friends and those with special needs....with an occassional raffle quilt for local charities. Previously I did 2-3 auction quilts a year and put several up for sale at 2 quilt shows to help pay for my quilting supplies. I find that only making quilts for those who will really enjoy them makes it easier to put the work into them. DH really enjoyed. for example, being able to hand a quilt to a young woman who had been horribly injured by a drunk driver and others to friends newly diagnosed with cancer. Doing this makes both of us feel good.

I am very aware that men, even more than women, often give up after strokes. When I saw him recently, he was walking etc quite well (Unlike my DH who had a major stroke about the same time), but my friend appeared to have aged about 15 years. I do hope my gift helps in some way.

hawaiilove 04-30-2012 04:31 PM

How wonderful for you to do this for him - bless you.
