Crazy Quilt from antique hankies

What a beautiful quilt you have created with your hankies. I love the way you have put them together and the purple sashing really sets them off. I love your creation so much. I have seen many many hankies at garage sales and estate sales and have often wondered how they would look made into a quilt and you have shown us how beautiful they can become. You have inspired to look for hankies while out at garage sales/estate sales or antique shops or just asking friends and family for the ones they no longer have need for. Thanks for sharing this with us and for giving me the courage to tackle one.

Add another stunning, beautiful, gorgeous - and entirely, way too much beautiful!!!

quiltingnonie 06-09-2012 07:48 AM

That is truly awesome! I too, have a collection of hankies that were my mother's and grandmother's, and just cannot bear to get rid of them. I have seen patterns for hanky quilts, but they seemed too difficult. This pattern is perfect! Thank you for sharing...and for the inspiration.

Your quilt is just beautiful!! I wish that I had all the hankies that we gave to my MIL over the years, but she was bad about throwing things away. Just PM me and I'll give you all the necessary info for you to leave it to me in your will. lol

MimiBug123 06-09-2012 08:43 AM

I love this quilt. I've seen lots of hankie quilts, but this is the most beautiful of all. You did a super job, and how nice that you get to wrap yourself in memories!!!

quaint4900 06-09-2012 08:52 AM

OMG above!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AWESOME !!!!!!!!!!!!! I have some hankies that were my moms, would love to make a hankie quilt wall hanging from them. I have other old hankies that weren't my mom, don't want to use them. You have really made a keepsake quilt. Congradulations..........can't say enough about your quilt.

Wow! The most creative and lovely quilt from handkerchiefs I've seen in a while.

Elaine433 06-09-2012 09:59 AM

I just love what you did with those hankies. That is a beautiful quilt to treasure and pass down through generations. I hope you put a label on it so 50 years from now it will be known who make this, when it was made and whose hankies they were.

love your quilt

i love your quilt I also have hankies from my mom, dad, gram and i just received some from my husbands mom. I have always wanted to make them into a quilt but not sure how to do it. Can you tell me how you did it? Did you put them on another pice of fabric to stabilize them etc. will be looking for your answer or any information from anyone of the board. I just hope I can find the answers i seem to always loose the thread I write on. happy quilting yippie54

I had this box of old hankies...some belonged to my Grandmother, some to my Mother and others that I had just collected from garage sales etc. I was trying to figure out what to do with them. They were too pretty to be discarded and so I decided to make a quilt from them. That way maybe they wouldn't get tossed out when I am gone. Sure enough.. everyone who sees this quilt wants this quilt ...another problem to solve! One of the hankies was sent to me by a pen pal I had when I was 13 or 14 years old. We lost touch many years ago. I am including a picture of the block that I put that one in. It has her embroidery that says "to Dear Ruth, Mildred". Wouldn't it be wonderful if she should happen to be a member of this board and recognize it!
I really enjoyed making this quilt and quilting it too, even though it took me quite a long time to do it. Hope you all enjoy looking.

I've always wanted to make a hankie quilt and yours is so lovely. I love the size of your blocks and the lavender latticework. I've thought about making a hankie quilt similar to yours but have a problem with cutting into the hankies. I just need to overcome that fear. Thanks again for sharing.

quiltingcurious 06-09-2012 03:39 PM

I can see why so many want to own this quilt, what a novel way to show off such beautiful hankies! You've captured many memories here and the lavender sashing and your quilting of leaves, flowers and feathers frames the hankies so nicely! I'm hoping your penpal may tune in to the QB and get in touch with you.

Sewfine 06-09-2012 04:12 PM
