OK! I was so inspired yesterday that I decided to start one for myself. I spent the entire day, starching and cutting my scraps. Any great tips you would like to share on making the process easier? This is so darn much fun.
On the string quilt, I found that the last diagonal pieces on the upper & lower corners showed up better if I used larger pieces there so they wouldn't get obscured by the joining seams. On the Buggy Wheels quilt, I laid out each row before I sewed the pieces together so I could be sure the seams on the HSTs, with the lighter side/darker side, were facing the right way according to the picture. It was a lot of work but so satisfying to see all those scraps take shape into something usable. Being reversible not only uses up twice as many scraps but also results in "two" different quilts that only take up as much space on the shelf as one quilt. |

On the string quilt side, did you piece it to a foundation piece? You have much larger squares without the binding running thru them. I love the looks of that. I am contemplating using a flannel instead of batting since there are so many seams. It might lighten it up a bit, and with that I am guessing I could just use that as my foundation.
I just sewed the string strips onto flimsy paper, pressed and cut to size with an 8.5" square, then removed the paper. Sewed four of them together, with the light sides joined, ending up with 16.5" final size square. |

Wonderful. Where did you find the pattern?
The above link is to a posting by Ninnie that got me hooked into trying Buggy Wheels. Ditter's string quilt This link is to a posting by Ditter that includes how to join QAYG blocks (about 1/2 way through her excellent tutorial). |

I would have a hard time deciding which side to show! Both are gorgeous!! Did you use quilt as you go method or finish both sides, then quilt? I love it.
Thanks for your kind words! |
What a wonderful quilt!

Scrappy quilts are always my favorites. You certainly win the award for stash busting this time around. I agree you should put it in the county fair, and maybe the state fair. WELL DONE!
|
Awesome You did a remarkable job
|
Wow!! Truly amazing -- GREAT JOB!!!!! What a great scrap quilt!! Now a question -- do you have fewer scraps? Whenever I do something to use the scraps they multiply not reduce in numbers.
You will enjoy using this for a long time! |
Just want to add yet another WOW! both sides are equally beautiful and the colors are so fresh looking. I think you should show it. It's definitely one of a kind.
|
Thanks for that info. I am going to give the flannel a shot, and see how it works. Of course that is down the road awhile. I will be piecing the wagon wheels for quite awhile! I've made a big dent in the stash drawers though, and that's pretty cool!

Great idea and an absolutely beautiful quilt!

WOW!!! Double WOW. Absolutely amazing!

How in heaven's name did you ever match up those seams for the quilting? I'm so amazed.

They are certainly the two nicest scrappy quilts that I have ever seen - just beautiful !
|
I haven't read all 26 pages of comments on this thread, but this is wonderful! I'm amazed. Absolutely gorgeous!

Oh my gosh what a quilt . My friends and I are making scrap quilts for the womens refuge.......but not that size.Congratulations
|
Great job - beautiful quilts.
|
You did a wonderful job using your scraps. I can see such patience, and vision in what you did. Your quilt with two amazing sides is just too beautiful for words. Thank you for showing it to us.
|
I declared war on my scraps for the past 2 weeks. I have cut, cut, cut and finally finished Thursday afternoon. Haven't sewn any together yet, but you inspire me to get after it. Thanks for sharing and inspiring! Love your reversible quilt! Great idea.
|
Holy cow! This is an amazing quilt you've finished! I've sent this weblink to my friend who loves the buggy wheel block. I love the QAYG method - it's a heckuva a scrapbuster and you completely finish a quilt in only a little more time than it takes to simply complete just the top.

What a blessing you have to be able to, no only sew well, but to put colors together that look wonderful and then to be able to make both sides go to so well. I don`t know which side I like better, and you shortened up your scrap pile, you must be so proud!!!

What a wonderful idea.

That is fantastic!

Well, I'm so inspired by your double-sided quilt that I re-read EVERY single post....every hint, link, etc. You are truly amazing!!! I printed off photos, the process, hints, etc. I'm going to hit my scrap pile and start this along with too many other projects. But, if I don't try it soon, I'll forget .... this is just too good to pass up on. Am sure many other quilters on the board feel the same way:) It'll be put in a project box and I'll work on it off/on. Again, thank you SO much for all of the inspiration:)

There's the anwser to what I wondered, I couldn't see how made your quilting come out so nice on both sides. I too have read all the posts, lots of great responses to your wonderful quilt.
|
Lovely idea. You sure put a dent in your scraps, I hope. Love the black sashing side. Both are so lovely.
