It looks like a long fringe on the bottom at first glance. I like it. Great quilt. Love the animals and the bright colors.

I like to tell stories about my quilts and the reason for fabric choices. You can tell her that the fabric represents the security fences and that the people are looking thru the fence to the animals in the wild. It works for me.
You could even weave long stories for the child about the quilt and the animals using the striped fabric to even represent houses the people are living in. |

I like the fabric but not the way you have it on the bottom. I would take some and put it on the top as well as on the bottom. The quilt is very cute, but don't leave that big chunk of stripes down there.
