i saw one like yours that a blind hem stitch was used-
the reason i do not use a straight stitch is then the edges (although tiny edges) tend to lift- and fray- this is avoided with the zigzag. less (raw-edge)

thanks for this information. i have decided to zig zag as you suggested. do i do some or most or all of the stitching with the batting and backing layered as in a quilt or do some of the zig zag pieces before layering. ?? i am using hobbs cotton batting.
