Great job so far!! You did a great job on getting your piano keys done, that was step 1! Your DF will be sew surprised and this will be his most prized possession!!!

I hope you are not getting too bored with this...I forgot to post this last night before bed - this is where I am up to now...I've got to finish the 9-patches, then join them using 1/2" strips of black.
One thing I did remember from reading some of my new stash of 300+ quilting magazines (gotta love garage sales!) and from watching Simply Quilts (omg!! a quilting show on tv!! not cross-stitch, but close enough), and from talking and listening to and reading other quilters - was the matter of the seams.
It has been ingrained into me that you press your seams open. I did this on the first patch that I stitched together...got quite bulky at the points. Now I remember to press seams in one direction on one piece and the other direction on the matching piece so that the seams butt up to each other and make it easier on the machine and your nerves...
let's see how we go this morning....

Midnight on the ironing board....

Here is the next bit - (are you sick of this already?)
These are the side panels ready to go...
ahhh the value of pinning!!

I figured out that by using 1" wide strips longer than I needed and cutting off the tails, gave my machine foot something to grab before it tried to feed the material in crooked...
