Hi Barb, I love the rag quilt and I think I might try to make one. Is flannel better than cotton? What's your opinion.

I have never made a quilt of any kind using only flannel. I live in the deep south and feel that would be too warm for me. I did put flannel in the center of this one becuase I thought it would be "fuzzier" when it frayed than regular cotton fabric. I know a lot of rag quilts are made with all flannel, so it certainly can be done. My guess is that you will get a much shaggier edge.. and probably more mess in the washer and dryer.

I made mine out of cotton, flannel seem too hot

Your quilt is gorgeous. I have a lot of flannels that I have been collecting to make a rag quilt. I have never used flannel in a quilt. Since it is supposed to fray after you put it together, do you still wash it before? I am assuming that you would because of the way flannel shrinks.

always wash your fabric before sewing. Fraying on a rag quilt comes at the end after you clip all the seams and wash. flannel is a #1 fabric for rag quilting. i perfer cotton, so many more options and works just as well!

I wash all my fabrics before I use them... so yes, I washed the flannel. Barb C

Thanks, I have learned I should never assume anything. It is much safer to ask questions. Thanks again, danna
