Your piece work in the background is exquisite and your applique blocks are so well thought out and have such significance. The border work is to die for. Big time kudos to you. excellent job!

I did have help with half of the blocks, the quilting and the binding, but the rest is my work.

The background is actually an exact topographical map of the area between the City of Poulsbo and the Suquamish Tribal lands. I pieced the land together and did a bargelo affect and appliqued it on top of the strip-pieced water. I used Mapquest of all things, to get the topography correct. The border is based on a woven bag I saw on the Suquamish Museum website. The corner logos are from the city of Poulsbo and the museum logo. The inspiration for the blocks came from the museum website, a local Poulsbo historian, and my imagination.

Thanks for the compliments, everyone. I am pleased to share the quilt.

It's a beautiful quilt you've made! As a Seattlite, I recognize the images and you executed them beautifully. I applaud you for taking this on and happy the mayor thought to honor the people on whose land we now live.

A great piece of history and art.

Now - educate me - what are the two things in the middle - I get the fish/worship/boats/clothing - but I have no idea what they are - the lower one looks like a shoulder pad or shield to me - and I'm about 99% sure that is NOT what it is!

A lot of people didn't recognize them. The top brown one represents a cedar bark hat. The shape is very common to the tribe. I saw several of them worn at the dedication ceremony.

Concurrently, the other one is a Viking helmet. I was told by a local who runs a Nordic Gift Shop in Poulsbo - they DID NOT HAVE HORNS as commonly depicted. She showed me several historical books that showed the viking rulers wore helmets without the horns.

I used raffia for the cedar bark hat and wove it into the shape. I used silk dupioni for the viking helmet and decorative stitching, then stuffed it a bit to give it some shape.

UPDATE!!!! My commissioned quilt "The Poulsbo Quilt" is now on permanent display in the foyer of the Suquamish Museum!!! For those of you who live in Kitsap/Pierce/King/Snohomish Counties in Western Washington, this is a must see museum! The Suquamish Tribe did a beautiful job of displaying the artifacts of their culture. I am so proud to have some of my own artwork hanging in a museum!
