I've now drawn my design onto Steam a Seam 2, I'm going to cut a background square around WOF square so 42" and then cut this pattern up to use as applique templates. This is an 18" square of Steam a Seam, divided into 8 sections across both central axes and the two diagonals. I then started drawing my design using pencil, ruler and a pair of compasses. The ONLY rule is everything you draw in one section, you must duplicate in the other sections. :-D Although because I am going to applique these sections, I tried to keep the pieces a workable size and not too many really sharp points. It's very static and geometric at this stage, so as to facilitate the applique. I will leave gaps between the pieces and when the applique is done, I will add more organic detail with FMQ. :-D |
Okay, I tried and I'm not happy with how it comes out. Each section looks a little different. Not my skill set I guess. Wonder if it would work to make one design and then transfer it to the next 7 sections? But it might not flow. Well heck.

Check this out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g16B64myG-E obviously it's done as a drawing so there aren't the limits of creating applique templates. Try and think of this stage as just the bones of the mandala - not the finished article. Anyway, this video is beautiful I think and might put you in the 'zone'. :-D |
