If you can't find coat hooks large enough - a lot of drapery rod holders have this open kind of bracket.

I love it, did something similar for a design wall with coat hooks and 1/4" pvc pipe with a large flannel sheet. The sheet can be rolled up on the pipe out of the way (it is in the family room in front of the door going to the garage) so it can't stay down all the time.
It seems like all the quilters I've met LOVE THE HARDWARE STORES. |

I have used 1" galvanized metal electrical conduit for curtain rods, cleaned it with alcohol, let it dry and spray painted it flat black. I think that the conduit came in 12' lengths. The rod hangers that I used are wood mounted to the drywall with toggle bolts. It would work for quilt hangers too.
