I know from experience that rag-style patterns can have backing/batting/front, or no batting, or even just the front if you use a two-sided fabric such as homespun or some batiks, or even denim. For the batting, I have seen different fabrics used, cut to the same size as front and back, then all three fabrics show up in the fringe on front. If you want poly or cotton batting, you don't want it to show, so batting pieces can be cut a little smaller than the seam lines in each block. I have seen lightweight glittery sheer fabrics used as batting to really pump up the look of the fringing. Flannel is great as batting since it makes the blanket warmer, and adds another color to the fringe.
Your shabby-chic is BEAUTIFUL! I would make a single layer ragged cover to match for the night stand =)
