ok we are on the illinois iowa border and we call these 1. may flies ( although it's july and we're just getting them) but we mostly call them 2. Mormon flies i'm sorry- i really don't know why except that Nauvoo illinois has a large population of mormans visiting the same time of year that the may flies come. everyone here calles them the mormon flies. even the mormons. funny- i thought we were the only ones plagued with these awful things. They multiply by the thousands and yet only live for about 24 hours and stink like fish. Ewwwww!

Hello from a fellow North Bay Quilter:) I was down at the lake yesterday and you can bet it is definitely the season for those things. The lake smells awful!

so glad we don't have them, or at least I don't think I have heard of or seen any

In our area of SE Michigan those are called mayflies. We spend our fishing season weekends (April-Oct) on the Lake Erie shoreline in Monroe County. They are totally harmless just annoying. The larger the hatch the lesser successful walleye fishing is. Many of these have not made it to the western shoreline because of the high westerly winds we have been having this season. But there are a lot of them out on the lake still.

Looks like May flies, but they are in June. We use to fish with them in Georgia, catch a lot of crappie for dinner lol
