you go K :D scrappy quilts are great! I agree with the others keep the block quiet until you have the quilt done or some of the ladies might not be so free with their scraps. On the other hand scrappy quilts just aren't some peoples cup of tea and you might keep getting their scraps anyway :D
Can't imagine throwing material away, shame on them but great for you! |

K x I'm thinking that some of those tiny scraps, little slivers even that are taken off when squaring, would probably make nice stuffing for something if they are all scredded into bits. |

Bev here's what I'd do if I were you - sort those scraps into longish thinnish bits, bigger squarish bits and tiny bits - but big enough for a seam! The long thin bits I would make into strings of 1 1/2" or 2/ 12" wide to use for strippy or log cabin, or even scrappy sashing. The bigger squares I would keep for more general scrappy - like that 9 patch you did a while back for example. And the smaller bits - I'd make a ton of crumby blocks, by the method in Izy's tute of say 3 or 4" square (depending on what size square rulers you've got!) Then you can join them all together with sashing et voila! One crazy quilt!

When I get to feeling better, I'll do that. THANKS HUN

Love your ideas with the scraps. I recently took a class at the local quilt store and asked if I could collect the scraps. I used them for applique on GS baby quilt. Remember, someones trash is someone elses treasures.

You're good!! I need to take lessons from you regarding scraps. I just have such a hard time with them for some reason.
|
It is hard to believe what some people will throw away   I'm am glad that you are making blocks out of them :D :D :D
|
No joke! Good of you to do that! I did that once at a class and they thought I was nuts. Too bad for them. I am the one with the overflowing scrap box now!

Wonderful idea. You show them what a great quilt scraps can make.

You are so funny K! Yes, keep it a secret, until you have a nice lappy quilt, then show up with a smirk on your face lol :)

 Way to go k3n. It will be funny to see them fight over the crumbs after you show them what you can do with them

Bevanger, your tub of scraps makes my mouth water, just thinking about all I could do with it!
More inviting than a Hot Fudge Sunday!!! :D :D :D Ninnie |
I did the same thing at my quilt retreat this past April. Someone had thrown away about 8 4-patch blocks with flannel and chennille!! Grabbed those babies. Plus, TONS of scraps that were no smaller than 3 inches square and larger! Plus lots of strips for make my "clothesline" basket or small rug! I had no problem rooting through the trashcan - yes I got some wierd looks but not after what everyone saw I had salvaged! Here's a happy dance http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/s...sic/wiggle.gif for dumpster divers everywhere! |
Wow Steph - send them to give my ladies a lesson in what to throw away! LOL
K x |
There ya go! Good idea!

Aww...shucks...taint nuffin! I just collect as I see things. When I find fabric that's a good price, I buy extra and share. Plus, the lady that cuts at Ben Franklins is VERY good at giving extra! Love it when she cuts. If I ask for a yard, I usually get about a yard and 1/2 :) :) So see? No so hard to share! Elle is going to be over the moon when she opens her package that SHOULD be there by now!! Just let me know what you are looking for and I can put it on my list of things to find. Just remember, it won't get to you until around the first of December. lol K...that goes for you too! If you need anything, let me know! |

[/quote] nothing goes to waste in my sewing room either. I have a big container by machine for scraps, and a bag tied to leg of table for all threads, and tiny bits, for stuffing things. You would be surprised how fast they can fill up. Also have containers, for larger pieces, all marked by size. hmm, sure gotta work on my organization, don't I? I may be a bit of a nut, about being organized, and you would think it takes too much patience or time, but think of the time you'd save, if like me, when you want something, you know exactly where to look  not bragging, just sharing. If your a tosser...umm, I'm sorry...just don't tell me, lol...hurts my feelings to think of all those bunnies that gave their little cotton tails, so we could have fabric, and then they go to that huge...ah,...starting to get visuals...can't go there...la la la la la... ok, i'm ok...it's alright...saving all the bunny tails I can  |

I save pretty much everything, just not sure when I will ever get the time to use them. Though I am willing to let people come and root through what is here. O f course, only if I get to see what they make out of it.
|
I save all my scraps! I make string quilt blocks out of the larger pieces. Recently I started sewing odds and ends together to make pieces of fabric. I then cut that fabric into strips and made a Camping Quilt. I used a recycled heavy flannel blanket for the backing. I didn't use any batting. I sewed the first strip down on the edge. Then sewed the second strip right side together with the first. I flipped it over and sewed on the next strip. When I was finished sewing on strips I added a binding around the quilt and it was finished. We went camping last weekend up in the high country and the quilt was sure nice to cuddle under.

I save stuff thats to small, makes stuffing :D
