Very cool. I'll have to wait for retirement to try this one, though. I still wear my ties occasionally for work.

Hi, your tie quilt is so beautiful!!!!! Must get at mine, I also have the book as I made the Farmers Daughter Quilt for our daughter a few years ago.. I will have to count my ties received from family members . My one uncle was 100 yrs old when he passed away.
Great Work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
Thank you all for all of the wonderful comments. I did have fun making this quilt. I did make a mistake when I said I need 96 different ties for the blades. I actually need 192. So therefore with 171 ties I only had to repeat 21 ties. I spaced them evenly so no two would be together. Thanks again for you compliments.

What a beautifyl quilt. I too would like to have the pattern. I have many ties that were my father's and grandfather's and have been wanting to make something out of them for keepsakes.

What a wonderful quilt, oh its beautiful.
What a treasurer for her. What a gift in return. simple quilter |
OH WOW!!!! That is just gorgeous!!!!!!

This truly is amazingly beautiful. I also want the pattern. And yes, I think I need to start hitting some garage sales (since my husband only wears a uniform)

What a wonderful thing for your friend. Every piece of fabric will be a treasure for her. I just inherited an old tie quilt myself. It was made by my great grandmother but I have no idea where all the ties came from. She has been gone many years so the history is sketchy. Some of the ties are shredded now but I intend to repair it someday. I think I can just applique new pieces onto it. The back has short and long quilting stitches like she was teaching somebody how to quilt.
I hope it's okay to attach my picture to your thread. |
Spectacular! This is the most beautiful quilt I have ever seen made from men's ties! I particularly like that you can still see that they ARE ties, and the quilt designs still work! I never would have though of using them in a French Braid for the border. Lucky Lady to get back her husband's 171 ties in this quilt

Very nice. I really like it. you did a great job. There will be lots of us out shopping the thrift stores after seeing that one. Did you prewash the ties? Will they shrink or bleed?
Beautiful!!

Thank you so much for the detail of getting the pattern.
What an absolutely stricking quilt. The border sets this off beautifully and to use all those (171) ties was amazing.
I'm awe struck on this one :) |
That is really eye catching. When I read tie quilt I didn't know what I'd be looking at when I opened your thread here - but I'm glad I did look. Very interesting and all around nice.
Well, isn't that the cutest thing!! I LOVE IT! I've had some tie fabrics for some time but never new what to do with them. Too bad I don't have as many as you.
Beautiful!!! That's a lot of ties!!!
WOW!!! That is Beatiful. My DH has lots of old ties and I have been saving them for a quilt. Couldn't decide how to do them. What you did is wonderful and I love the border. Thanks for the idea. I am saving this thread in my Bookmarks.

Yes I the ties were prewashed. I also stabilized each tie with a very soft iron-on stabilizer. For the fan blades I used the small end of the tie. None of them bled or shrank as far as I know. I really didn't have a problem with that
Absolutely awesome!

I popped into the library to check out the Fons and Porter book and I just want to say that I am even more impressed with what you made. If I had just flipped through the book I would have passed their fancy fans right on by. They seriously need your picture in the book! I wasn't impressed with theirs at all.
And while I was out I just happened to get into a few thrift shops! From three shops I grabbed 91 ties for $19.80. average .22 cents each! :D When I die my kids will wonder why Mom was collecting men's ties! Thank you so much for sharing. If I make one it will be a lot smaller than yours but I hope just as nice. |
That is beautiful. I was planning to use the bowtie pattern to use my dad's ties but I love yours. I will look for the book. Thanks for posting.
I am sure yours will be just as nice or nicer. Thanks again for all of the great compliments.
:D   This is absolutely beautiful. I'm working on a Tie Quilt as well. The one that I'm doing is using the Cathedral Window block. I'm making it for a friend of mine. His father passed away recently, and I thought it would be nice if he had to ties to keep as a momento.
What a beautiful quilt. I love the vibrant colors. I have a copy paper box full of ties maybe this will inspire me to get them out. Thanks for sharing
Your quilt is beautiful. The colors are striking.
how long did it take to make? I sure looks like a labor of love. |
That is gorgeous, and the border is just terrific!!!
Did you have a pattern for this? I have started saving ties for this but have not came across a pattern. Yours looks lovely!
Cathy |
Catjo, The pattern came from a book by Fons and Porter. It is "Quick Quilts from the Heart." Hope you enjoy making yours as much as I enjoyed making this one. It took about a year to make but I didn't work on it constantly.
Thank you I will soon be getting that if I can.
Cathy |
That's Gorgeous!!! Love the braided border, the white fabric really makes all of those ties pop right out!!! :D :D :D
That is soooo clever. Makes me want to start collecting ties! Need a pattern though.
Oh, what a beautiful quilt!! You are so resourceful and talented. Did this take you a long time to complete?
Stunning....this is one of the most creative tie quilts I've seen. Extra points for working with such a difficult medium x
Now that's a lot of ties! Very well done and you put them in the border as well - very clever! 8)
What a great idea for such a traditional quilt. It's beautiful!
I also made a tie quilt by Karen Stone called "Untitled". It's really wild looking though. |
Awesome.. note to self.. start collecting ties..............again.
OMGosh! That is beautiful. Really nice job. Pls post directions or where we can get them. TX
LOL tippy. Ur 2 funny.
Wow. Great job. I like the use of the extra bits of tie in the braid!
I love it. You did a fan-tastic job. Pardon the pun. I have been saving ties for a while now just waiting on the perfect pattern to use them with. I had read somewhere that ties looked great in a Grandmother's Fan quilt and now I beleive it. I'm getting mine out and staring on it tomorrow. Good job! It's gorgeous.
