First, consistency is hugely overrated, I agree with what others have said, the non-traditional treatment adds a lot of interest. I am close to done with my TV hand project, The Grandmothers Flower Garden. Sounds like this would be ideal for a hand work project.

Looks great. You said it was difficult. There is an easy way to construct the top in about a day. Kaye Wood has a pattern on her web site that I used with strip quilting. Very easy. Fast construction. Mary Korpal

don't give up, look for an easier way. I wanted to make a tumbling blocks quilt but didn't want to deal with all of those points... I had head that Kaye Wood has a pointless thing she does so I went to her site and found the Stacking My Blocks pattern there. It's so easy. I think she has a YouTube video on this technique too.
