Maybe becasue it is of an older era fabrics, you should try hand quilting with over-all pattern of Baptist Fan, its half circles and would compliment all those beautiful blocks happy stitchen JRSAY :-) :) |
wonderful quilt. I also think SID is the way to go. You don't want to take away from all the lovely blocks. I love the backing too - what a find!
|
Beautiful, beautiful quilt, Sandi!!! I love the fabrics, so vibrant looking!!! I'm bookmarking this to refer back to for whenever I get around to doing one!!! :D :D
|
It's beautiful! I, too, love the backing fabric.
|
Your quilt is gorgeous. It is wonderful that both you and hubby created this fantastic treasure. You did a great job--and you even tackled the curves of the drunkard's path. Love hubby's fabric choices. Love the backing.
|
I don't know if I am more impressed with your quilt, or the fact that your hubby went fabric shopping with you and looked at fabric, and picked some out!
|
Beautiful quilt. I love your backing fabric. My DH would love that too. He is a huge history buff and the Civil War is one of his favorites!

Quiltncrazy, I am a very blessed woman to have such a supportive hubby. He knows the names of all the blocks in this quilt top. :D There is a country route we like to travel that has a couple of barns with quilt blocks painted on them. He spied them before I did and told me the names of the blocks, before I could tell him. I smiled and he said, 'I pay attention when you show me something.' He also picked out the binding fabric. He has been such a positive driving force for me. He has blessed me with three sewing machines this summer. :D I have used one of them to do some of the piecing of this quilt top. I will post pics sometime later of each one, a Singer Treadle, a Singer Featherweight and a Singer Handcrank. Sandi |
Beautifully done URR quilt!! You should be proud!! Ever read any URR quilt stories?...go online and research some of them...

We have read the info E. Burns has in her book. Checking out URR quilt stories online sounds fascinating. Deara |
I love your quilt!! And where did you find that backing fabric?? :D
|
I have the underground railroad book too. I want to make one. The colors your husband chose are beautiful.

Thank you sewjoyce, We found the backing fabric at Hancock Fabrics. Sandi |
Sandi---I know your husband is thrilled with his quilt. It is so awesome that you made this just for him.
I made a URR also and I gave it to my husband. He LOVES it!!! He is a Civil War buff too. |

Very nice quilt.I love the colors and all the different blocks.Good job :!:
|
How great to have such a theme oriented quilt. I think quilt in the ditch so as to allow as much of the block to be displayed as possible.
|
I am going to attempt to hand quilt this top. My friend Florence who works at Hancock Fabrics picked out the needles (size 7 - quilting/betweens) I need to use. She also advised me on what basting spray to purchase. I used my 40% off notions coupon for it. She also told me that the quilting technique I was describing to her was called 'Echo Quilting'. That is how I will quilt this URR. Really looking forward to starting this next step. Sandi PS To all of you who have shared your advice. THANK YOU EVER SO MUCH. I really appreciate all your compliments and comments. |
Which Book are you guys referring to? I love any thing to do with URR and quilts and dont want to miss one!! Thanks
|
I have made this quilt - gave to my daughter for Christmas last year. It was fun because every block was different. I like your colors.

The book is by Eleanor Burns & Sue Bouchard. UNDERGROUND RAILROAD SAMPLER ISBN 1-89177613-4 I hope this is what info you needed. Sandi |
I got my book from Amazon.com - used books - it was just like new and price much reduced.

He loves all things pertaining to the Civil War. I have been inspired by all of you who have done the URR Quilt. This quilt top has been a learning experience for me. I have only sewn a friendship star and a nine-patch block previous to this undertaking. I have had many days when I ripped out more than I sewed. I have learned so much in the process. :) Hubby helped me choose the fabrics and the backing for this quilt. :D He has a good eye for color. I love his choices. I do not know how I will quilt it. Hubby suggested quilt in the ditch. I want this quilt to hold up to everyday use. Please give me your suggestions and comments. Thank you all, Sandi |

Thank you all, Sandi I would be honored to help in any way I can when you start yours. I know I had issues with the log cabin block. Mine was wobbily and lopsided. I made that block three times before I was happy with it. This quilt top was a real learning experience. I really like doing Sampler quilts. Blessings, Sandi |
This is absolutely beautiful. It looks like you have been making quilts a long time! Really well done.

Did you buy all of the special quilt in a day rulers recommended in the book - specifically, did you need the one for the flying geese? Just wondering. That one and one other are the only ones I think I need to buy as I have others that should work. Thanks

Blessings, Sandi I did purchase all the rulers that the book suggested. This was my first attempt at following a pattern and I thought it was best being a newbie. I was pleased with the results and the detailed instructions the book has was easy to follow. Eleanor Burns is a great teacher. I like that she is a detail person. Blessings to you, Sandi |

Her techniques are different from anything I've ever done before and I'm a bit concerned about tackling this but will do it and learn. Everyone says her books are so easy to do. Patty |
