Mimi, love the machine, it does look like a 57 Chevy, so Chevrolet is a perfect name for the Morse. Those Morse sewing machines are really good machines, but it is not a "15 Clone!" I hope you realized it is not a class 15 clone?

miriam 11-08-2012 02:49 PM

There are other clones but the class 15 has the tension on the end. Other type clones have the tension on the front.

Hello- I live in Australia and my husband recently bought me a clone in a local op-shop for $25 and I stumbled on this thread whilst trying to find out about the machine. I was wondering if anyone knows anything about these machines. It is a Brother made in Ireland imported into Australia with Australian made bakelite pedal and plug. It looks like it was barely used and sat on top of grans cupboard for 50 years.. sadly there was no box of accessories but the original tape measure was there with the piece of card board still sitting on it! It has a straight stich foot and a darning hoop. It needs a clean and oil and the op-shop cut off the cords as they don't sell working electrical goods...my hubby will rewire it for me so I can try it out..after a good clean and oil of course! I read somewhere that the last digit on the number on the bottom shows the year of manufacture which is a 1 so given the Dublin factory opended in '58 I figure it was '61? The case is in really good condition and there is an extending table too. I have turned the wheel and it is so smooth... Oh and the cover is a red crocodile skin pattern. Any thoughts or advice? :)

I'm drooling all over my keyboard!!! That one looks good. I've seen a couple in really good condition like that but the tension was not put together right or the needle shaft turned a little - I'd say my best advice is use it and enjoy it - you won't be able to out live it unless you are really trying...

singing spider 11-08-2012 06:12 PM

So it's a score then!

So my hubby scored with this! I am itching to use it. Why do I want to sew with this more than my new Bernina?...Maybe because it is just so shiny and of course now I want to buy a whole bundle of feet for it. I hope the motor and tension are OK..it has been used at least once as there was a small bundle of cuts off threads underneath from some long ago project..

This also has caught my kids fascination much more than my new machine.

better get back to work now..

cheers

I made a new posting about the Japanese 15 machines: http://www.quiltingboard.com/vintage...e-t207416.html
feel free to add to the photos

miriam 12-02-2012 02:19 AM

What I have found as I have worked on clones is markings on the bottom of the machine to identify what company manufactured the machine. Not all clones are marked. Even the old Singer 15 was not marked on the bottom.

Someone told me this DeLuxe 146B is a 15 Clone...is that possible? It works great and I really love it's look. It's the Same machine as an Aldens 146B, but mine is badged Emporium and takes the same bobbins as my vintage Kenmore.

It is not a Clone. Clones look like a Singer model 15 series and Singer model 27, 28, 127, and 128.
Nice machine though. It was made in Japan. Look underneath to see if there are any markings cast into the underside of the bed.

Thanks for confirming...I really didn't think so and I knew this was the place to check. I'll check the list again.

While it is not a Japanese 15 clone, it is a badged Japanese machine.

Perhaps we need a thread for Japanese badged machines. I am going to guess that the Emporium was made by Brother.

yes we do - I have several and need to shoot some pics.

I would be up for that too. :) Do Dressmakers count?

Well, who is going to be the one???? Does it need to be authorized or do we just go for it? I can start it if everyone is OK with that. I brought in my Brother 280 today to begin the clean up and took pics.

Yes, Grant. Dressmakers count. In fact any vintage machine that is not a clone of the Singer 15 is eligible.

KarenR 12-05-2012 06:45 PM

Some nice machines!

miriam 12-06-2012 01:52 AM

I'll start it in a couple days - my work schedule is heavy for a couple more days. I think dressmakers new homes good houskeepers wizard etc will be sure to count just have your pictures ready to go up I know Melissa has a ton of them too

Shalini, She is pretty. I love the color. I like the motor bracket too. It's adjustable. Does she have a cabinet or case to go in? I see a hinge.

I have a weakness for Clones. I picked up another one yesterday. A poor neglected one at that. It was locked up bad too. Rust spots in places and a case that needs to be recovered pretty bad. I have a question about the numbers on the badge under the stitch levers. Does anyone know what they are or mean? Shalini's Belvedere above is a 101. The one I just bought is a 200. (I know it's bad, this is the "before" picture)

I had a 128 clone that was a 228.

Some don't have a number. Can anyone shed some light on this? Also, does anyone know what kind of paint they used? Was it Lacquer?
Thanks.

Miriam, I have that same 'clover' machine. Mine is in great shape and sews very well, but it still isn't as quiet as I'd like.

Does it make the noise when you wind the bobbin with the clutch out? If not it is not motor noise.
What happens when you hand turn it? Is the noise coming from the bobbin area, top, bottom, left or right of the machine?
Mine works real smooth - usually there is some little bit of dried up oil causing them not to turn quite smooth enough. I kind of hate to part with that one.

Glenn is our go to person for finish on a machine - his computer got hacked last week - he should be back in a while. I'm thinking some of the machines have shellac over what ever they have for paint - I rarely remember to take a before picture. It always amazes me how well those clones clean up and get ready to run another 50 or 60 year or more.

Thank you Miriam. The paint is really resilient on them. That is what got me thinking about what kind of paint it is. I already have Blue Mo spinning freely and the paint is all cleaned up on it and most of the rust is gone. The machines themselves are resilient too. One more thing to like about them.

I finished the machine itself late last night. I still have some wiring and a case to refinish, but the machine I bought two days ago is done. A new record for me for a complete tear down, clean, oil and adjust job. What a difference! I am calling her Blue Mo. Some before and after pix.

She sure is pretty now. It is amazes me how well these clone are painted. I am going to hazard a guess that the paint used is some type of automotive paint.

Nice! Does your machine have a number on the plate below the stitch lever? Your feed dog knob is farther to the right than the ones I have seen. Maybe I haven't noticed them.

Thanks Steve. Interesting that the Sewmor Model 303 was advertised as a featherweight at 19 pounds. I have not seen one but will be watching, LOL.

miriam 12-19-2012 02:02 AM

19 lbs is NOT featherweight... LOL sounds heavy enough to me. I should weight some of the ones I have - some are heavier than others come to think of it. DH will think I've lost a few screws of the machinery.
