Here is a quilt that I treasure. It was made when I was 10 years old by my grandfather.

As you can see in the bottom right corner there are a few places where there are holes in the red fabric. How do I fix these?

Wow Henry, what a treasure! I must say I envy those who have pieces of their history like this. Your grandfather did good work.

If you want to keep the integrity of the quilt, you will need to find some red fabric from the same era as the quilt. The best way I've seen to 'fix' areas where fabric has ripped or is breaking down is to simply applique the new fabric over the old. I have not tried this technique though I do have a quilt given to me by an old family friend and this is the technique I am going to use to restore it. There are other techniques out there that might suit you better. I don't know enough about them to go into any detail. Hopefully someone else who does will post. I hope this helps.

Applique a piece of fabric (same finished size) over the piece you want to repair. If the quilt is and quilted. go back and add in the quilting lines you covered up with the repair piece.

    I hope this makes sense.

    Fun quilt!

Yes my grandfather made that :) Apparently he made many quilts. My grandmother and I talked yesterday and she said he quilted a lot once they stopped farming. He was so good at it that people would pay him to make quilts for them. She said they took a picture of everyone he ever made but that when her house burned in 2004 that scrapbook burned because she never found it after the fire. She said he would also make other quilted items besides regular bed quilts for people at nursing homes to brighten up their rooms. And to think he has been gone from us 20 years this August and I never knew that about him until now. It makes me treasure my quilt even more because she said that my quilt and my siblings quilts were the first ones he ever made without any help from her.

Wow!! He was good!! I think Henry--you can now see why you love it so much! And carrying on the legacy is up to you! :D

    Good luck with repairs.
