I like your idea - same pattern, different fabrics, plus different borders. When my next door neighbors had twins, I made a simple quilt top, using muslin squares, then added squares on 2 opposite sides, but out the middle fabric, then by putting 4 squares together came up with a block with 4 triangles in opposite sides. I had just purchased a new machine with lots of interesting machine embroidery stitches - I went out and brought lots and lots of various variegated and other colorful rayon thread, then used one design around each "square" with the 4 triangles. After a while, my enthusiasm started to wane, so I went out and bought blue and pink gingham, put a wide border of blue gingham on one quilt, with a wide border of pink gingham on the other quilt and used an all over cute bear pattern for the backing. The parents were excited, as we hadn't really gotten to know them that well after they moved in, but we stayed friends, enjoying their children as the grandchildren we didn't have as yet until we had to move away. My husband even played Santa Claus for 2 years, until we started to babysit for them more frequently, then they figured the twins would figure out who Santa really was. The quilts were the same, but different, and they didn't mind.
