So I'm making a rail fence for myself and was pulling fabric out of the box that I liked. I came up with 4 that I liked and measured them. One of them wasn't going to have enough (the light green) so I found another that would work well. Well I was cutting and I found that I was 3 pieces short on purple and 4 pieces short on yellow. I pulled out some other fabrics that I thought might work and cut them. Now I'm not so sure.

As these were purchased forever ago and I know I won't be able to find them again, I have to deal. So any ideas on placing the yellow and purple? I have 2 ideas but don't really like either that much

idea 1, the other odd purple piece is in the bottom left corner but it was cut off

a somewhat better view of idea 1, the yellow checkerboard is down the center

Rather than introduce another fabric, maybe a solid square of something that's already in the quilt would work better. If you squint at your layout, the oddball fabric really jumps out. JMHO

I was looking at my scraps and the little pieces that were left over and found that if I sew them all together I would have enough. Would this look weird? But I feel that it would look better than the new fabrics. Because I really don't like that purple. Well, I like it, just not in this quilt

I've pieced scraps before to get enough for the strip, I think that's a great choice.

i piece my scarps together all the time to get enough fabric for a project. i am notorious for running short of fabric. once you quilt it ... you hardly notice the pieced fabric. good luck. happy quilting.

I am sorry to say I would look for another purple to use... that bright one just screams at me... :?

I have done that on occasion. Two of the pink pieces in the quilt shown are pieced with scraps

I think idea 2 looks just great! the purple looks to dark to me, but the yellow and green look FAB!

The center placement seems better to me but they are very long rails and could be cut in half thereby giving you more variety with the yellow checks. Just an idea?
