Reading Pillow Part...Pink!
#13
Thanks everyone.
I used Pellon Thermolam Plus sew-in for the batting, since it's pretty firm and won't melt when ironed. The main piece and sides were quilted with 1" apart lines, no backing fabric, just top and batting (though you could use muslin for extra firmness). I left a 1/4" on the short ends of the main piece unquilted to reduce bulk at the book ledge seam and so sewing the gap closed wouldn't be as difficult.
I used 1/4" for all seams.
The main body piece is 24 1/2" L x 13" W.
After quilting, I sewed a 6" handle (6 1/2" x 2", short ends folded in and pressed, press in half, opened, long sides folded in and pressed, fold in half, press and stitch each long side), measure 9 1/4" up from the front lower edge of main piece, centered and sewed the handle ends down with a square (like you do with elastic).
The side triangles were cut from 9" L x 7" W rectangles (I just marked the half point at the top (and 1/4" on either side) and with ruler cut from each bottom edge to the 1/4" point at the top to form the triangles).
The front 'book ledge' is 8" x 12 1/2" (folded in half to form 4" x 12 1/2"), sewn on the short sides, turned right side out, pressed, slid a piece of batting in and quilted lines about a half inch apart.
With RS together and raw edges aligned, center and sew the book ledge to the 13" end of main piece that has the handle 9 1/4" up from this edge.
Starting at one lower front end, pin the triangles around the long sides/bottom of the main piece, keeping the book ledge sides out of the seams. Sew around each triangle. Sew lower front edge 2" - 3" inches inward from each corner (leaving enough of a gap for turning/stuffing.
Turn right side out, push corners out, press book ledge out, press the unsewn fabric (gap) 1/4" under, stuff pillow and hand sew the gap closed.
Finished size is 12" wide x 8 1/2" high by 6 1/2" deep at the base (excluding the 'book ledge'). I wish I'd made the ledge just a bit wider and used double bat since I like to read thick, heavy books, but it works as is. Hope the directions don't sound too complicated, it's really a pretty quick project once your pieces are quilted.
