Yes that is right the strip needs to come all the way past the tips of the last two sewn blocks you put on. . Then don't cut the angles until the next strip is sewn on. Just line the strip flat straight across lining it up with the middle block edge right sides together and pin. Sew all the way through the whole piece. Press and then you can trim the excess fabric off to a quarter inch seam and square off the hexagon.
