S & W in Black
#65
So sorry for not being more specific! S & W stands for Stack & Whack. Someone else might be better at explaining this, but on this quilt it involved stacking 8 layers of fabric and cutting them into wedges. All 8 layers of fabric have to be lined up with the exact same repeat pattern all the way through, so that when you lay the wedges out in a pie shape, each block will have the kaleidoscope effect. Hope this is helpful!

Hi Brenda,The pattern was from "Magic Quilts by the Slice", by Bethany Reynolds. I changed the size, and added the pinwheels myself. In my opinion, the best type of fabric to use is one with larger, clear cut flowers and/or other shapes, with a contrasting black or white background. The more varied the colors and sharper the contrast, the more your blocks will stand out. I've tried it with smaller pattern repeats and less contrast and color, and the effect just isn't the same. It's kind of a fussy process stacking and cutting it all, but getting to see how each block looks when you lay it out is worth it all! If you look at the quilt album on my profile, there's one I did in white which kind of shows the opposite contrasting effect.

Gorgeous, I love your stack and whack. I made my first last year, made 3 more because it was so much fun. I'm planning to make two more this year, it's such a fun process. I really like the addition of pinwheels in the sashing, just perfect.

I love your stack and whack. Could you share what the original fabric looked like? Do you put a segment of the original fabric on the back. I've seen some S&W quilts here that have done that and it's always such a delight to see how the fabric is transformed. Your placement is just beautiful too!
