Thanks everyone so much for your nice replies!

    Here's a mini-tut:

There really isn't any pattern to this block so I'll tell you how I did it. (It's more of a process than anything else). I started in the center of the quilt first by making my red star since I wanted it to be the very center of the quilt. I then began making my stars and placing them to the right, to the left, to the top and to the bottom of the red star. I kept making stars until I determined I wanted no more than 8 rows by 8. This size would give me all the room I needed to include all the colors I wanted to use. I used Kona White for the background since it's a stark white and would make the stars pop even better!

You'll notice each star butts up to the other with no blocks in between! This is a unique feature! It means the bottom of one star, the right side of one star, the top of one star and the left side of one star all meet together sharing the spaces. The background squares (between the 4 stars) form what looks like a Maltese Cross.

As you work up and outward from the center star, you can determine when to stop after you've reached the number of stars you want in your mini. The mini will work horizontally as well as vertically as a wallhanging or will look good from any angle as a table topper. You also will be working entirely from a design board or design wall and everything will be sewn together after all 64 blocks are on the wall or however many blocks your mini will contain. Please refer to the example for block placement as it can get very confusing otherwise. I determined ahead of time which colors I wanted next to each other so I moved no blocks around after I was finished.

    Here are the specifications:

For 6 complete stars, you'll need (24) 2" squares for the background

For the partial stars, you'll need (20) 2" squares for the background

    block size: 1.5" finished
    cut size: 2" squares

Assorted scraps in the same color families

Border size bricks: 2" x 3" cut size
    1.5 x 2.5 finished size assorted colors

Border size mortar: 1" x 2" cut size
    .5 x 1.5 finished size

Border corners: (4) white squares cut 2x2
    (4) assorted colors cut 2x2*

*these squares were shortened for the top and bottom borders to fit properly.

    Finished size: 17x17

    Inner border: cut 1.5 x 14

Joining the blocks: sew the blocks into rows, then join the rows together, add inner border, then outer border.

Tip: To make the stars stand out, use a variety of fabrics: graphic prints, Batiks, florals, plaids, stripes, etc. Another tip is the stars will pop better by MQ in the ditch 1/8" from the edge.

For making a wonky star, please refer to a tutorial for wonkiness. (or just take a scrap, add it to the corner of your 2" square and sew it on; repeat for the other corner; square it up to 2"; voila! you're done! repeat this process for the other 3 sides of the star)!

In writing this mini-tut, the border reminded me of bricks and mortar so that's what I call them in the tut.

Hope this helps you in making your Scrappy Wonky Stars much easier and be sure and PM me if you have any questions! We look forward to seeing everyone's minis! Thank you, Diane!
