Twinkie, The block is a square, not a rectangle. I started out with 10" squares of fabric, and the blocks finish at an odd size, about 8 3/4". Since you cut the blocks twice on the diagonal, I guess I loose 1 1/4 inches in seam allowances. I didn't really care about the finished block size since I was only using this one block in the whole quilt (didn't have to match up the size with any other blocks), and just kept making them until I got a large lap size quilt that I liked!
