Somehow it doesn't look right

I agree with you. It seems to get lost with the white. Would you have a very soft yellow to put with it?
The idea of putting several together and then a border in white and then more blocks with a border in white might work.

I like the one with the sashing - easier on the eye.
And FWIW, I think the four corners should be the same colour. If each of the corners has a red block, or a green block, or a blue block, it makes it more cohesive to me. But then again, I'm a bit OCD about that sort of thing! :P

I like it without the sashings. It is lovely with just the blocks. Maybe a border using one of the colors in the blocks.
Here is a pic of my crumb blocks with just a border around them. It's 42 blocks..6 across and 7 down. I didn't think it would look right without sashings but I like it with just a border.
Maybe you could audition some solid color fabrics as borders with your blocks just to see how you like it. Perhaps it won't work but it's worth a try.
Good luck and let us know how it works out.
Have a great day.

I like the suggestion of alternating with plain blocks and putting them on-point. Else, colored sashing with white triangles and with white cornerstones which would add a star into the design.
