i think all scrappies are controlled-unless you close your eyes! well, there are at least a dozen [and a half] tops before this one so i'm not sure it will get quilted for awhile!

You are so funny! there are no Y seams here--Y seams are shaped exactly like the Y--these are all straight. However, you are correct about the 3/4. First you take your four little blocks & sew them together just like a four patch. Then the 1st strip you attach, you only sew 3/4 of the way down to the end. then you sew the next strip on, until you come back to the first strip. you must sew this on before you can attach the fourth strip on the outside. Got it?

Phew!!!!!! Do I feel better now! I can go to work with the comfort that I now know what Y seams aren't and "just the facts" on those tricky facts of yours! I can go into my day content. Thanks! 8-)

(Note you youngsters out there..the "just the fact" reference is a phrase used by the main character in a TV show called Dragnet by Jack Webb. Opps  I am showing my age! At least I can't say I remember it from radio...)

This is probably just quilter's personal choice. The photograph is good but doesn't really tell me the measurements. I can see this working really well for all those bits and pieces that quilters accumulate. Thank-you for sharing.
it IS a matter of personal choice. you could make this whatever size you wanted! i have a 3" wide ruler i use for almost everything--but i used 2 7/8 for the litte squares & 7.5 for the outer strips & if you want to cut the whole shebang out at once, it's 10 3/8"
it's nice b/c i work w/ mainly scraps & if you have a piece of fabric to use, but it doesn't make 10 3/8, you can always cut the 7.5 and then cut the 2 7/8 from another piece.
i've cut separate pcs a lot for this! & have only used each color once.

It is called "partial seaming" ... the first strip is left unsewn towards the end, since it is actually longer than the piece it is being attached to. The reason it is longer is because on the fourth piece, you are going to attach (second, third, and fourth pieces, actually) just as though you were doing a log cabin ... once the fourth strip is attached, you will notice your first piece needs its seam stitched down to make the square ... it is a great technique!

I have lots of strips pre-cut, and I thought (since I love scrappy), it wouldn't be anything to cut a square, (hold on to the original piece) stitch the four patches and then go back through the pieces I cut the squares off of and get the strips I needed to complete the blocks ... this is a very FINE pattern for those of us who are "scrappers"! ... it would be sort of cool, if we could get the figures for each sized strip ... for example:
just sort of figuring on email here - - if I used my 1.5" strips ... those turn in to a three inch four patch ... and, and my strips to go on the four patch would have to measure that 3" + the extra for the next strip - - that would be 4.5" ... is that correct?
so, if I wanted to know how big a scrap to keep for my "scrappy retro" ... it would be 1.5" + 4.5" ... so I would need to save six inch strips for that size ...
do we need the math for other sizes? Have I confused you enough? Did my thinking online help you figure out a formula? <wave>
