Hi, Linda. Thank you for sharing your template. I plan to do a spiderweb quilt and needed to know how to make the kite-shaped piece. I made a string quilt recently and used scraps of lightweight cotton for foundations. What are the advantages of paper foundations?

Instead of transferring the lines onto your foundation paper, could you just make lots of photo copies and sew all 3 layers while using the paper piecing technique? Maybe someone else just asked the same thing or am I missing something?

I just started paper piecing, so I am new to this technique.

Or, why can't you just skip the foundation layer and sew directly on your photo copies? Or am I asking a stupid question? (sorry!)

If you go on the Missouri Star Quilting site, you can get a tutorial on how they do their spider web quilt...I made mine this way and it turned out beautifully. They have papers you can purchase and a great template that you can cut around to make the center part. Very simple method and goes together easily. No drawing needed. Good luck.

The Missouri Star Quilt company has a plexiglass template for the "kite" piece, makes it faster. Just finished piecing a Spiderweb quilt top. I use mail order catalog pages for my foundation, they tear off easily and I'm recycling the catalogs. I cut a 10" square of the catalog page and then cut it in 1/2 diagonally. I tape the kite piece fabric in the center of the triangle, then piece lots of different size strips. I've included some pictures of my quilt top, it just needs borders. I pieced all of the blocks on a Singer 301 and 2 of my treadles:
a 1914 Singer 115 and 1917 White Rotary.

When you want to copy to newsprint, check out dickblick.com. They offer a ream of 81/2 x 11 newsprint (that's 500 sheets) for just over $3. You can get several reams for the same shipping cost and build your supply or share with your pp friends.
