    I just finished one that refuses to be "flat" as well...but it has batting
    I have discovered that flannel sheets work the best as "batting"--and even better if starched lightly before sewing them into the runner

    It took me a while to figure that out too. You have to sew the strips every other one, then it works out. Sew them one corner to the next.
