    For the most part before. Cross hatch work is best marked or positioned in some way ahead of time due to how easy it is to stray off straight lines when you only see about 20" of the quilt at a time it is easy for the line to stray crooked without even realizing it. I will usually mark registration points ahead of time as well. A spine for a swirl or feather I may wait until the last minute to mark. Because this wall hanging was only 50 x 55 I marked everything I wanted to quilt before loading.

    I use the clover blue water soluble pens when marking this far in advance. For marks just before quilting I will use a purple air erase pen or chalk.
