I have done one small twister and learned what you did about needing high contrast fabrics between the blocks. I also learned that cutting the squares a little bigger helps when using rotary cutter around the template. I sliced too far on a few of them. It does create a bit more waste so maybe using a smaller blade and being more careful will allow me to keep using the 5" blocks.
