Hard to tell from a photo, but you might not need to make your applique stitches so close together. About 1/16" inch apart is good on straight or gently curving lines; closer together for tight curves and points.
Also, you might want to experiment with silk thread or other finer thread; can make your stitches even more invisible than they already are.
Can't tell if you are already doing this, but it can be helpful to not cut out the applique shape first. Mark the shape on top lightly with pencil, then use a small scissors to cut just a couple of inches ahead of where you are working. Keeps edge from fraying. Just make sure the pencil line gets turned under.
